If you do this on a server, do literally all the clients crash, or only those with the offending chunk loaded?

Also if you are on a server and do this, all clients crash, also the server.

Confirmed. I've also added a crash log. It also seems that when you log back in, the anvil has taken the place of the redstone it fell on, rather than turning into an item. The redstone is simply gone - no item is dropped. However, the anvil does take damage from the fall.
