 Description

Fixed with OS X 10.9 Mavericks

When Minecraft is running with a singleplayer or multiplayer world loaded, pressing the expand button on a mac in the top left corner of the Minecraft window typically:

  • Freezes up all activity on the screen (except the ability to move around the mouse)
  • Causes the minecraft window to change to various randomly placed text and odd visuals of black squares and random images
  • Background audio continues to play from other applications but not Minecraft
  • The fans don't rev up on the macbook so it isn't burdening the processor
  • If you wait long enough, the computer will catch up with a few processes but won't completely work at proper speed until you manage to quit minecraft by spamming the force quit hotkey

Update:

  • Freeze occurs even on lowest graphic settings, and tiny render distance.
  • Freeze occurs even if the minecraft window is already at the maximum screening dimensions (Filling your screen) and you hit the expand button (intending for it to get smaller), it still crashes and random images are displayed in the window.
  • Holding F3+C for 10 seconds, after the expand bug has locked up the display, will cause: the minecraft window to change to a new set of odd visuals, very slightly decrease or increase the window dimensions (based on whether you were increasing/decreasing with the expand button), and changes your mouse to the rainbow spinning wheel.
  • In one instance, when the screen was already at max dimensions for my screen, I hit the expand button (as to make the window smaller) and as usual it froze. However, holding F3+C for 10 seconds and letting it sit for 30 seconds successfully made the window minimize to the proper dimensions yet was completely black. I could use other applications and everything seemed fine, however, as long as the black screened minecraft was still open, the mac top bar wouldn't say it was switching between applications, it only said 'Minecraft' in the top left of the screen, even though I could use menu items for other applications that simply appeared to open behind the 'Minecraft' menu item. Force-quitting the blackscreened minecraft window made everything normal again.
  • Crash also occurs when dragging the corner of the Minecraft window as to expand it.

To prevent starting Minecraft fullscreen and thus crashing:
- Quit Minecraft
- Locate Minecraft folder http://hopper.minecraft.net/help/finding-minecraft-data-folder/
- Open the file options.txt with a text editor,
- Change the line fullscreen:true to fullscreen:false
- Save the file
- Start Minecraft

Can I resolve this then, seeing as it was fixed by Mavericks therefor not an issue with Minecraft?

Comment by Ben Lewis [ 23/Oct/13 ]

After upgrading to OS X 10.9 Mavericks(update released today) this bug seems to be fixed for me, the window resizes as expected without restarting my computer as it did before the upgrade.

Comment by Ben Lewis [ 11/Oct/13 ]

This bug still occurs in the latest snapshot 13w41a, i tried expanding the minecraft window (when in windowed mode). My screen went black and then my macbook restarted.

Comment by Kim [ 11/Aug/13 ]

I used the text edit to stop the game from opening full screen but is THAT the solution. Are we not able to play Minecraft fullscreen? Please help. I play on a MAC OS X 1-.5.8 and I want to PLAY FULLSCREEN! What is the solution to stop the game from freezing when you try to play and it goes fullscreen???

Comment by Dante Guida [ 08/Aug/13 ]

This is on 10.5.8 too

Comment by Jake Young [ 07/Aug/13 ]

Has this issue been solved?

Comment by Simons Mith [ 28/Jul/13 ]

I've just found I can provoke a crash (sometimes) by shrinking the window too. Having been playing maximised for a while, I shrunk the screen down again and got this screengrab:

Comment by Kumasasa [ 27/Jul/13 ]

Now it does.

Comment by Mikayla Wirth [ 27/Jul/13 ]

The issue MC-21603 doesn't include 1.6.2 so it's not totally true to be put there.

Comment by Kumasasa [ 26/Jul/13 ]

@Mikayla Wirth: That's MC-21603

Comment by Mikayla Wirth [ 26/Jul/13 ]

I'm having the same issue where fullscreen isn't working when I'm playing 1.6.2, but it just goes to a blank screen that's black. If I press the rest button for a moment and click cancel on resetting the Mac it displays again, but in the small window. I can get it to go into the maximized window, however fullscreen I cannot.

Comment by Luke Oslizlo [ 25/Jul/13 ]

I'm getting same issue on Minecraft 1.6.2. I have a Mac Mini (mid 2011) with OS X 10.8.4. When I try to maximize window it gives me kernel panic and then my Mac restart. It is only in Minecraft 1.6.2 and the new launcher. For example Minecraft 1.5.2 works great and I can normaly maximize window. Mojang it MUST BE FIXED!

Comment by Wil Tietsort [ 21/Jul/13 ]

My error report (MC-20677) has been redirected here, but I feel it should redirect to MC-21603, which is a separate (though perhaps related) issue. Many of us, though not experiencing crashes, are unable to play the game fullscreen because it simply does not display. I'm really not interested in playing Minecraft until this gets fixed.

Comment by Isaac Bennetch [ 20/Jul/13 ]

Hi, I'm having pretty much the same problem except my Development Console error message looks very different. I'm told it's the same bug, though, so here's my report:

I am seeing a similar issue with one of my two Macs. I have a MacBook Pro running Mac OS 10.8.4 which is NOT affected, but my iMac 3.6GHz Intel Core i5 OS 10.7.4 is reproducible 100% of the time. However, my entire computer doesn't crash, in fact the Launcher remains open, but the spawned Minecraft application closes hard, so maybe I should open a new issue. To reproduce, open the Minecraft Launcher, then press the Play button. While Minecraft is opening (it takes a few seconds), click the green "maximize" button. It crashes every time on my iMac. If you wait and let the black screen pass, splash screen load, and main "Singleplayer/Multiplayer..." menu appear, it does not occur. It has to be in the first four or five seconds while the application is starting. I can also cause the crash pretty much any time the computer's thinking and I resize the window; for instance while searching for servers in Multiplayer. The Apple error reporter appears after the crash, but aside from the Development Console messages, Minecraft doesn't tell me anything about what just happened.

Here's what the Development Console has to say during this time (approximate start and end due to me re-opening the application and not being sure where one attempt ends and the next starts):

Having the same problem but on MacOS 10.6.8 and Minecraft 1.6.2, as described in MC-21603. We are getting the same GL error of 1281: Invalid value.

I have to play in fullscreen as I've had issues with Minecraft not registering mouse movement/clicks properly in windowed mode, possibly because I'm using a Wacom tablet and its mouse. Fullscreen is the way I get it to work perfectly, please look into this fullscreen stuff.

Comment by Noah Jackson [ 17/Jul/13 ]

My Minecraft does not crash whenever I expand the window, but it isn't expanded properly. Ex. at the bottom-right corner it doesn't show all of the "Copyright Mojang AB. Do not distribute!". Also when I do this my mouse can be over the background, but have Singleplayer highlighted to where I can click on it. Whenever I Shrink Minecraft after Expanding it, On the top and right corner of the application, it shows parts of the screen behind Minecraft, whether it be my browser (Chrome) or the background of my computer. Sometimes if I give it tons of time before expanding it, it works mostly properly. I am, obviously, using Minecraft 1.6.2. I did not have this problem with other versions of minecraft.
My computer is a Mac Mini from late 2012; Processor: 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7; Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3; Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000 768 MB; Software: OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)

Comment by Simons Mith [ 10/Jul/13 ]

More info: I still can't play /full-screen/, but if I just maximise the MC window, that fails the first time (giving a screen full of garbled display data), but will then work on second and subsequent tries. 1.6.2 plus launcher 1.0.9.

Console log contains this error, AFAICS on both runs through:

I've just come here from the LWJGL thread. (MCL-90) Mac Os 10.5.8, MC 1.6.2,

Now I can play again, I see pretty much all the symptoms described in the original bug description for MC-6665.
My game /was/ configured to run full-screen so I initially just got a black display and no activity when I first tried to run 1.6.2. Re-configuring to play in a window, I can play again, (yay!), but resizing or using the full-screen hotkey or config causes the problems described in this bug.

Partial extract from console log, including the tail few lines of the previous session:

Downloaded 1.6.2, but it appears these issues have not yet been addressed. The game still does not display fullscreen. It loads fine (does not crash), I can click buttons, hear the game, and if I press FN+F11, it will downsize to a window that displays the game, so I could play it on a smaller screen. But I'm really bummed that I can't play fullscreen (unless I want to try to play blind).

Comment by Corner Wall [ 08/Jul/13 ]

Well, I'm just posting that I have the same issue with the resizing. Tried restarting, re-installing, re-everything. Causes a crash of computer everytime.
Mac OSX 10.6.8, 3.06 GHz i3, ATI Radeon HD 4670.

So sad...wanted a horse.

EDIT!
Apparently they've changed something with the launcher as it looks different and MC now works fine. ( Yay! Horses! )
Although... Minecraft crashed while I tried resizing the window too slowly. The resize seems to need to be done quickly...

One more vote.

My late 2011 MBP 13" w/ integrated HD 3000 graphics, OSX 10.8.4 (all up to date) will panic fairly regularly when resizing the window. First started seeing the problem 5 days ago when we updated to MC 1.6.1.

We see the same kernel extensions in the panic dump as Kumasasa, above:

Kernel Extensions in backtrace:
com.apple.driver.AppleIntelHD3000Graphics(8.1.2)[2AAECC61-71E4-3226-ACD7-BDA8FED0185C]@0xffffff7f8a22a000->0xffffff7f8a28bfff

Just a gut feeling that the HD 3000 graphics are the smoking gun.

I'm hesitant to comment twice in one day (especially since Grum was kind enough to pick up this ticket) but I've observed the following behavior and wanted to share.

I think the issue I'm experiencing might be because of the lwjgl update from 2.4.x to 2.9.0

For me personally - all releases prior to 1.6.1 didn't have this (crashing) behavior when I resized the window. However, the snapshots have shown this issue for a while now (including 13w16b, the oldest I can get from the launcher). Digging around I noticed that even tho 13w16b appears to have been released before 1.5.2 the JSON file says it uses the newer lwjgl version.

If there is any useful data I can gather any additional details to assist is resolving this issue - I'm happy to do so.

Comment by osespe [ 05/Jul/13 ]

I think it's a problem of the Mac version, I think with the windows does not happen. If anyone has bootcamp and installed windows, would be nice to try if it is the same.

Comment by Adam C. Greenfield [ 05/Jul/13 ]

I'm using a Mac with a English keyboard and this issue is 100% reproducible for me - so I don't know if that is a factor.

Comment by Wil Tietsort [ 05/Jul/13 ]

I don't know if it's worth noting that I have a french language keyboard. I don't think it has anything to do with fullscreen not displaying, but I have noticed that Minecraft 1.6.1 doesn't recognize the different keyboard configuration (if I press 'A' on my keyboard, it responds with 'Q') when setting up my keyboard commands I had to change all my keyboard commands when I first loaded the update because they were configured for my alternate keyboard.

Today I buy minecraft for mac, and when I give the launcher and I play the game window opens, if you maximize doi or adjust the size of the game screen, I get all the blank screen and I get a warning that your computer has crashed and is rebooting.
I tried to do anything more fler on startup, or on the screen of a player, multiplayer options and the same thing happens.
I have updated java.
What I can do?
thanks

Also add something else:
I have a keyboard Spanish, and cuandoe stoy playing in chat I type the letters: ñ 'ç'
There is no way to write them, and other players can.
Em also happens in single player.
I have Spanish language in Spain and also prove to the English language, and there is no way to write them.

Comment by Kevin Olson [ 04/Jul/13 ]

I'm not sure about toggling fullscreen, but resizing the window using the new Minecraft launcher under OS X 10.6.8 causes a crash and sometimes a kernel panic.
(Also, I tried the suggested manual LWJGL updating and that did not resolve the issue.)

Edit: Oh yeah...suggesting a possible tip that might help others: I know it's odd and only a temporary workaround, but if I drag and resize the window (larger) really quickly then it won't crash.

Comment by Ron Risley [ 03/Jul/13 ]

Just another data point: I have two machines with identical OS's (Mac OS 1.8.4) and identical installs of 1.6.1. The MacBook Pro (mid-2012) has no problems with window resizing. The Mac mini (late 2012) consistently throws a kernel panic on resize.

Comment by Wil Tietsort [ 02/Jul/13 ]

I CANNOT toggle fullscreen without issues. I get a blackscreen if I go fullscreen, whether while in the game or if I start the game fullscreen. My game doesn't freeze or crash, it never has. It now simply does not display fullscreen with the 1.6 update (the game continues to play, it just doesn't display).

Comment by Daniel Jones [ 02/Jul/13 ]

I have to agree with Wil above, I can now resize and toggle in and out of full screen without issues, I have not tested the logging in with full screen enabled though.

Comment by Wil Tietsort [ 02/Jul/13 ]

I haven't had any trouble changing screen size with the window, or toggling fullscreen on/off until after the 1.6 update. Now, I can still change the window size, but if I turn fullscreen on (or start the game fullscreen), Minecraft does not display. The game doesn't freeze; it plays because I can hear the sounds (including myself move or clicking buttons from the menus), but the entire screen goes black fullscreen. I have to exit using F11, then it will display in the smaller window.

I think my problem is different from that mentioned above, but perhaps it's related? I also believe I played 1.6 fullscreen immediately after the update (I could be wrong), but now the screen always goes black on the fullscreen setting. Could another setting resolve this issue? Is it a performance issue (because I'm using Java 6), or is it a bug? I haven't had this trouble until now.

Comment by Alex de la Cruz [ 29/Jun/13 ]

Ok, I just tried to resize the window (with the newest launcher) and the OS froze like usual, this time however, I got this screen: http://tinyurl.com/ovccywx

This is the first time I have gotten this screen, all the previous times, the Mac would simply unfreeze after a few minutes.

How do I check if the new launcher correctly installs the newest version of LWJGL??

Comment by Anon Ymus [ 28/Jun/13 ]

The new launcher should auto-install 2.9.0. The old launcher will only do 2.4.2, though.

Comment by Alex de la Cruz [ 28/Jun/13 ]

I thought the new launcher was supposed to update our LWJGL. We have to do it manually?

Ill try this tonight

Comment by Michael Stenberg [ 28/Jun/13 ]

This is fixed for me after updating the LWJGL - it has to be done manually.

Comment by Alex de la Cruz [ 28/Jun/13 ]

@CubeTheThird I had originally created another issue where I expained the two problems that happened on my iMac. (my issue was closed as being a duplicate of this, which im not sure it is.)

When I clicked the fullscreen button in the options, my iMac would freeze and after a short while the whole screen would turn white (as if the game had gone to full screen but only showed white). While this was happening, I could still hear all the sounds, for example my iTunes music (so its not like the whole OSX froze). I couldnt do anything to get out of this white screen, but the volume keys on my keyboard did work, making the noise they always make when you press them. Since I couldnt get out of this white screen, my only option was to shut down the Mac by holding down the power button for a few seconds, so if I had any unsaved data, it would be lost.

Another thing that happened was that when I tried to resize the window manually (not with the maximize button) the screen would freeze. This time however, the screen would unfreeze after some minutes.

So no, my computer does not fully crash, it just seems to freeze. I can assure you that when I first got this iMac (which is the newest model) I was able to resize the window and even go fullscreen. I have not yet tried to test this with the new launcher, but maybe I should. If I do, I will record it with my phone to show what happened.

Comment by [Mod] CubeTheThird [ 28/Jun/13 ]

@Alejandro, do you mean to say that your computer does not crash, or that you simply do not see the kernel panic screen? Part of the reason I say that the problem may be hard to find, relating to Zach's last comment, is that it's possible the new Minecraft launcher is using an OpenGL function (which is supposed to work), that is for some reason crashing Mac computers. When software crashes itself, its normally a problem with the software. When software crashes the computer, it could just as easily be a problem with the Operating System, a system driver, a pluggin/library, etc. which is why I say it can be hard to find.

Comment by Zach Bruggeman [ 28/Jun/13 ]

@CubeTheThird - Totally, I was just hoping maybe it would catch a bit more attention. And yeah, it's a bit more difficult to find the problem (am a developer) when it's low-level like this, but I have a feeling it's happening due to how the new launcher is wrapping Minecraft, since I've never had this issue with the old launcher. Mac's OpenGL drivers are notoriously poor, and especially so with Intel graphics.

Comment by Alex de la Cruz [ 27/Jun/13 ]

@CubeTheThird I have this problem but I do not get the Kernel Panic screen. Also, I used to be able to resize the window and even go fullscreen when I got this new iMac, but I am not anymore, therefore its likely a problem with Minecraft.

Comment by [Mod] CubeTheThird [ 27/Jun/13 ]

@Zach, for issue 'bumping' it is more effective to vote for the issue, and promote others to do the same. Note however, as the issue relates to a kernel panic and not merely an application crash, that it may be difficult to find the root of problem. It is even possible that the problem lies not within the minecraft application launcher but the jvm or the kernel itself.

Comment by Alex de la Cruz [ 26/Jun/13 ]

This is a pretty annoying bug, Ive had to play MC on the standard small window size for a few months now. So I cant make videos in 720p

Comment by Michael Stenberg [ 25/Jun/13 ]

I have to agree.

Comment by Dustin Held [ 25/Jun/13 ]

How is this not fixed before an official release?! Mojang this is a MUST FIX.

Comment by Zach Bruggeman [ 25/Jun/13 ]

Just want to "bump" this, as this is still happening on the Minecraft 1.6 pre-release, with launcher 1.0. When I tried this today, I resized the window, saw the Minecraft window go a darkish red (graphics error), and then kernel panic. I'm personally surprised that a bug causing a whole system to fail hasn't been looked into by Mojang further. Such is life.

Comment by Tom Scheeper [ 18/Jun/13 ]

I've been having this bug since the launcher came out. When I expand the window, doesn't matter what size. The screen freezes and 1 second later my mac just turns off. This really annoys me, I can't play minecraft in a reasonable sized window while watching youtube tutorials on the same screen. I'm not able to post any crash report at all. This is because my computer shuts down after 1 second.

Comment by Adam C. Greenfield [ 07/Jun/13 ]

I'm observing the same behavior Zach noted (Full system crash on window resize) in snapshot. Core i5 Macbook Air / OSX 10.8.3

Confirmed it doesn't happen for me in 1.5.2 however. Full system crash with a similar backtrace to the one noted by Kumasasa

Comment by Zach Bruggeman [ 01/Jun/13 ]

I'd like to add a bit more. For me, on the 13w22a snapshot on dev launcher 0.8.2, when I expand the window it causes an instant kernel panic. I've been able to reproduce it many times, just open a world and press the maximize button. I'm on a Mac Mini on 10.8.3, so it seems to be a widespread Mac issue. There's no crash log of course, since it's a kernel panic, but here's the kernel panic log: http://pastebin.com/yjj3hP6r

Comment by Michael Stenberg [ 18/May/13 ]

Also have the issue. Retina MacBook Pro, 15" 10.8.3.

Will test on other MacBooks in the Apple Store tomorrow, and will likely get the same results.

Comment by Zachary Elliott-Hatton [ 12/May/13 ]

Having much the same issuse on OSX 10.6.8, using 13w19a. Either all screen activity freezes except for the mouse, or just just Minecraft becomes entirely unresponsive and has to be force-quit. The following OpenGL error is reported in the launcher console when starting the game, under the headers "@ Post startup" and "@ Pre render" : Client> 2013-05-12 19:40:14 [CLIENT] [SEVERE] 1281: Invalid value

Comment by [Mod] CubeTheThird [ 22/Mar/13 ]

What exactly do you mean by 'shortcut'?

Comment by FireHunterX [ 21/Mar/13 ]

This is not dependent on Minecraft version, it is a software integration issue. To fix this bug, you would need to remove or disable shortcuts while Minecraft is open.

Comment by Daniel Jones [ 17/Mar/13 ]

Yes this is still an issue in 1.5

Comment by Daniel Morris [ 10/Feb/13 ]

I can confirm this. Doesn't happen on osx snow leopard, only seems to affect mountain lion. I am on an imac so it does not only happen to retina MacBooks.

Comment by Daniel Jones [ 04/Feb/13 ]

Update: the issue still seems to happen both on java 6 and 7, and can happen even on a simple window resize. its doesn't just cause Minecraft to lagg or crash but the whole mac itself until you can force quit or a forced restart. From my research i have only heard about this happening on retina MacBooks, however i may be incorrect on this.

Many Thanks
Daniel

Comment by Harrison Balogh [ 30/Jan/13 ]

Just realized it happens even if you're expanding simply by dragging the corner of the window.

Comment by Daniel Jones [ 26/Jan/13 ]

Still happens on 1.4.7 on a macbook pro retina 15", it also happens when going fullscreen by pressing fn, alt and F11. It happens consistently and can be reproduced however can screen shot as the whole mac freezes.

Comment by [Mod] CubeTheThird [ 10/Jan/13 ]

I've tested the issue without any applications running, and the crash persists.
Regarding processor: I can't view the activity monitor during the crash because the display freezes. I mentioned that my fans don't rev up because it could be a sign that Minecraft was still trying to process the window expand...

@[Mod] Kumasasa
I updated the Description to explain the F3+C affect on the window. It doesn't give me a crash report because it still freezes the display. The one time it unfroze from using the F3+C command, the minecraft window was black-screened...

@[Mod] CubeTheThird
The cards are up to date. I'm on a mac, so these updates are handled through the app store.

Comment by [Mod] CubeTheThird [ 09/Jan/13 ]

This could potentially be caused by your graphics card. Be sure to check for updates for its driver.

Comment by Kumasasa [ 09/Jan/13 ]

Please force a crash by pressing F3 + C for 10 seconds while ingame and attach the crash report here.

Comment by FireHunterX [ 09/Jan/13 ]

What applications are running when you do this?

Just to clarify, Minecraft sucks down processing power A LOT, even on more recent Macs.

Ran TextEdit on a Mac Pro 6 core. Same thing happened.

Try quitting everything and trying again.
