 Description

I know that animal suffocation was fixed in the 1.4.1 pre-release but discovered this today. I was spawning chickens in a small enclosure as shown in the screenshot. When the eggs hit the back wall, around about where the dirt meets the stone, about 50% spawned in the dirt and suffocated immediately. All chickens spawned in at that point suffered some damage, but I put this down to the fact that they were spawned at the wall and not on the floor. I was spawning the chickens one at a time (i.e. not spamming the back wall) as I didn't want to hit newly spawned chickens with eggs immediately after they appeared.

Steps to reproduce:

Aim eggs at line between dirt and stone at back wall of enclosure, or just above line. Approx 50% of chickens that spawn will do so in the dirt block as if having landed on the stone block's top.

Expected result:

Chicken spawns normally.

Not a major bug, just flagging it as out of 6 or so chickens that spawned, at least half died.

Cheers!!!

T

This just happened to me on a vanilla Java 1.16.4 server. I threw the egg at a solid block near a floor of hoppers, and the baby chicken spawned halfway inside the block and died from suffocation damage.

Try again without mods and datapacks. Those could mess with things in unpredictable ways.

FaRo1 Singleplayer, Optifine preview version, some datapacks (not related to chickens/eggs, just some VanillaTweaks such as player graves and chestplate + elytra, as well as some other smaller datapacks such as netherite items exiting burnt shulker boxes and NevTooExp).

My CPS was about 6.

Is there anything else about your setup that you can say? Modded server, some specific angle you threw at, the rough speed in eggs-per-second™, …?

Comment by Emerson Yu [ 14/Sep/20 ]

I saw the white particles and the "Chicken dies" subtitle.

Comment by Fabian Röling [ 14/Sep/20 ]

But they make the damage indicator, just like snowballs etc.

Comment by Emerson Yu [ 14/Sep/20 ]

FaRo1 Eggs don't do damage, though?

Comment by Fabian Röling [ 13/Sep/20 ]

sssmmmnnn I just tried it tens of thousands of times, with various angles and distances, and couldn't reproduce it. Are you sure you didn't just hit a chicken with an egg?

Comment by Emerson Yu [ 13/Sep/20 ]

Confirmed for 1.16.2. I was spam-right-clicking a bunch of eggs into the wall of a 3x3 hole.

Comment by Rus Ares [ 15/Jun/20 ]

Confirmed . . . and it's pre-release 6 for 1.16

Comment by Chapman Wing [ 20/Aug/15 ]

This still happens to me in 15w34a.

Comment by ANBO Motohiko [ 13/Jul/13 ]

Still I can reproduce this problem on 1.6.2.

Comment by [Mod] Ezekiel (ezfe) [ 11/Jul/13 ]

Cannot reproduce in the latest version of minecraft

Confirmed, and annoying. ba-caw

Chicks born from eggs thrown at a block, often suffocate within that block.

Oddly, I have consistently noticed that this happens far less (to the point of only rarely) if the egg is thrown at wood or stone (even maybe glass !? not enough data yet to be sure). If I didn't know better (and maybe I don't), I'd think that the increased density of these two materials makes the thrown eggs more likely to spawn outside the block as they should.
I realize this sounds kind of stupid software-wise, but I throw a LOT of eggs (around 300-400 daily) and this is consistently true.

Also: I always play in peaceful.

To reproduce this is simple:
1- Make up a large farm of about 300-400 chickens
Do this the usual way - mating intensively.
To check your population count:
a. Enter the colony - after all chicks have matured - with several FULL seed stacks...
a. Immediately and quickly feed them to full saturation...
b. Get an accurate count by adding the number of seeds it took to feed them.
2. Run around the coop a few times, collecting eggs, depositing them into a chest as you fill up.
3. Count the #eggs collected..
4. Locate / create a few dirt blocks at 4 or more blocks high and at an angle/area where you won't hit anything (i.e. chickens) when you shoot at it and so the resulting chicks will fall down into the coop.
5. Aim & throw half of the collected eggs at the dirt blocks, counting the number of successful chicks vs. dead chicks.
6. Replace the dirt block with another of the suggested block types (wood/stone/glass...) & repeat the test with the other half of the collected eggs.
Now you can create stats and report them using the collected data, if you wish.

I hope this unusual info helps you in debugging the problem. It's pretty annoying.
What's my release? I don't know how to check (I'm still a newbie in several areas), but everytime MC asks if I want to update, I do immediately. I hope that helps.

Confirmed. This also happens when throwing eggs into a wall, the newborns get caught in the wall and killed.

Can we get a confirmation of whether this happens in 13w10a and an update to the affected versions?

Comment by Chalmes (Jon) [ 19/Nov/12 ]

Confirmed 1.4.5 though the rate that it happened in my testing was around 1 in 100 eggs thrown. Its possible its orientation related.

Comment by MisterSanderson [ 17/Nov/12 ]

This problem persists on 1.4.4. Happened to me today.

Comment by TnT (Trinitro Toluene) [ 10/Nov/12 ]

Is this still a concern on Minecraft 1.4.4 Pre-Release? If so, please update the version affected.

Duplicate of MC-1725.

I have had very good results with using a half slab placed from above in such a way that you throw the chicken egg up at the bottom of the half slab. I haven't tested this using the upside down half slabs but what almost always happens with this method is that the chicken spawns immediately below the half slab and drops down, minimizing any suffocation damage it does incur on spawning.

Comment by eleazzaar [ 25/Oct/12 ]

I can confirm that in Minecraft 1.4.1pre eggs thrown at a wall will often get a chick stuck in the wall and it quickly suffocates. I didn't count but i'd but it more at 25% to 33% of the time. Doesn't seem to be a unique property of the dirt block.

Comment by Josh Miller [ 24/Oct/12 ]

This should be fixed, because it is super-annoying when you build a dispenser to automatically throw the collected eggs for you. (This problem is only present with non-transparent blocks. If you use e.g. glass, the chickens won't die.)
