Sticky pistons can create invalid game states. See the screenshots I have posted below.

@Chalmes (Jon) You can still get a completely floating trapdoor or rail using a 1 pulse to leave it there and then safely destroy the piston without updating it

So does updating the block.
I've also gotten redstone to crash the game and lose the drops.

Confirmed, ALTHOUGH in both those cases, breaking the piston drops the item.

And yes, I searched, and couldn't find a bug like this one or one somewhat relative to this one.
