 Description

Sometimes you have to double tap multiple times for the player to start sprinting. Also sometimes when you are sprinting you slow down and have to stop and start sprinting again. These things get you killed when you are fighting other players and are very frustrating. This might be a bit hard to reproduce but it does happen frequently, and it's very aggravating.

When you start sprinting you should stay in sprint mode no matter what until you release the forward key. This isn't the case when you run up stairs. Or if you try to jump over a block and catch the top of it slightly, you stop running. Having to keep re-sprinting makes the mechanism feel clunky and cumbersome and is frustrating.

Resolved with the addition of the sprint button.

Maybe tab? Or Caps lock if you have caps lock on you dont need even hold button to run.

i agree With This Bug Sprinting needs to be Get default like in 1.5.X .... you cant even Play a Parkour.

Comment by skwerl56767 [ 06/Jul/13 ]

I also agree with the separate button idea; it is very frustrating when you try to go into a sprint, especially on a server, and you don't actually sprint like you expect. I think part of the problem is the fact that in order to sprint, you must double tap 'W', not hold a modifier key such as Shift. I do know that Shift is already in use for sneaking, but I'd rather have the sprint key, if not be a modifier key, be another close key such as 'R'. I've also noted that in 1.6.1, yes, the sprinting is delayed quite a bit, and it makes me even more frustrated to use it. I wouldn't be surprised if several, if not lots, of people agreed on that.
My suggestion? Bind the sprint key to something else, or at least allow people to configure it, that you HOLD, not double tap. And get rid of the annoying delay seen in the more recent versions of Minecraft.

I will be making a similar bug for 1.6.1 where the sprinting is delayed.

I agree with the seperate button thing. It's especially a problem when there is moderate to severe lag. It makes it almost impossible for me to sprint (or fly for that matter) on my computer

"I think the best fix would be to link sprinting to a button, instead of double tap."

Definitely. One of the fundamental problems with double tapping is you have to first let go of the forward key to do it. That means you have to slow down first before you run. That is not a good thing at all and doesn't make sense. There were mods to add running to the game before sprinting was added that used separate keys and it worked perfectly. I see the advantage of not having too many binds but this is not worth saving a bind over, it's very poorly implemented.

Still present in latest version, 1.5.

when the hell will this be fixed?

Comment by Tenebrae [ 09/Feb/13 ]

Honestly I think the best fix would be to link sprinting to a button, instead of double tap. I don't mind slowdowns on stairs and such, that's realistic, but the non-responsiveness and strange behavior of sprinting atm (on PvP servers especially noticeable) is about the worst I've seen in any game so far.

Comment by Tenebrae [ 14/Jan/13 ]

^^^^ Exactly that, would love a fix for that.

(Using MC 1.4.7) For me, this bug is half visual and half physical: my FOV toggles between that of walking and that of sprinting, and my forward momentum is somewhere between sneaking and walking. It's very easy to reproduce: 1) log on to a server; 2) try to sprint a few times; 3) rage. In order to remedy the glitch, you have to take your finger off your forward key (typically W), and try sprinting again—usually takes a few tries before you sprint normally.
This is annoying on all servers, not just PvP servers (but, seriously, have fun with UHC). This bug has been around for as long as I can remember, and it is one of the few bugs that really irritates me.

Comment by Tenebrae [ 26/Dec/12 ]

Yeah I can confirm that this is terribly annoying on PvP servers, and this is still the case in 1.4.6.

Comment by Tails [ 30/Nov/12 ]

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.

Comment by Pedro P [ 06/Nov/12 ]

Fact: There is a bug when you press W 3 times, it sprint bugs: it doesnt know whether to walk or sprint. So it stays in this sprint-stop system. There is also a bug that when you fall a block, the sprint resets.

Comment by Raphael [ 06/Nov/12 ]

@Andrew: Ive experienced that too. No, my hunger bar wasnt always depleted, but still you slow down for, as he said, no reason. Also after that happens, you just have to doubletap w again and you sprint. That wouldnt work if you were too hungry.

Comment by Andrew Plumridge [ 06/Nov/12 ]

@Raphael "Sometimes you run on a flat surface and you slow down for no reason" Maybe he doesn't know that, and it's the start of hunger

Comment by Raphael [ 06/Nov/12 ]

@Andrew: Thats not what were talking about. We know that.

Comment by Andrew Plumridge [ 05/Nov/12 ]

Sprinting ceases when the "sustenance" or hunger reserves have depleted and the hunger bar begins to jiggle and go down. You can then sprint again until 3 bits of hunger remain on the hunger bar. Vaguely relevant tip: You can sprint up a half-slab staircases

Comment by hund [ 28/Oct/12 ]

like I said, it's aggravating. There are a lot of things you can do in the game that you can't do in real life. So that's a stupid excuse. And like I said, it doesn't just happen when running up stairs. Sometimes you run on a flat surface and you slow down for no reason.

Comment by Jeffrey Song [ 25/Oct/12 ]

haha. sprinting is supposed to work like this. If you ran up stairs in real life, you would slow down. If you jump over a fence in real life, but slightly hit the top, you will stumble or slow down. This is not a bug, this is how the game is supposed to be, so get used to it..
