 Description

Since I've upgraded to Mac OS X v10.8 I barely hear the “pickup item” sound. I think this is a Java related issue but I'm not sure. It's not specific to Minecraft 1.4.x I can't hear the sound in Minecraft 1.3.x neither.

This sound is very important for the feedback, and also for the satisfaction of picking plenty of stuff floating on the ground

Yes good news the new launcher makes sounds so much better !

Good news!

This should be resolved with the new Minecraft Launcher, with the update of LWJGL.

That's probably due to one of the multiple Java updates during the .3 update process. However, a clean 10.8.0 install doesn't come with Java. It would be interesting to know if the Java that OS X 10.8.0 proposes you to install before running a Java app, is different than the one updated for 10.8.3.

Anyway the openal.dylib update works for me.

I can also add this:

A clean install of OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.0), this does not happen.
After performing the Apple Software Update to 10.8.3, it happens.

Also, updating LWJGL did not work for me

What I meant, is that if it was an issue on Minecraft on Windows, since it's a rather important sound, they would take more time to look for a fix. I don't know if you see, but the status has been promoted to "Resolved" and it's not.

Yeah, exactly. It's a Java problem. Keyword here? P-r-o-b-l-e-m. A problem is a problem, regardless of what system it's on.

Oh and by the way, Mojang uses both Mac and PC, as they have released Minecraft for the Mac and for the PC, and even Linux.

It's Java problem, here.

Comment by FireHunterX [ 08/Apr/13 ]

If it were a problem on Windows, then it would just be a needle in the haystack of other issues with Windows. And by that I mean Windows has a lot of problems already.

Comment by Leonov [ 08/Apr/13 ]

If it was a problem on Windows, I suppose Mojang would care more about it

Anton, this worked like a charm for me. Thanks so much for posting!

Comment by Leonov [ 25/Dec/12 ]

Well, until then, I will download the latest OpenAL thing Thanks

Comment by Tails [ 25/Dec/12 ]

Resolving then, since not a Minecraft issue. Mojang is aware it uses an old LWJGL version, but currently the new version has more issues for some users than the old one.

Comment by Leonov [ 24/Dec/12 ]

Thanks! That works for me! Thanks a lot

I fixed this issue by updating bin/natives/openal.dylib library to latest stable version from http://lwjgl.org/download.php

Comment by Leonov [ 24/Dec/12 ]

It is really just a problem of volume ratio between this particular sound and the others. Nothing more. At least for me

Comment by Leonov [ 24/Dec/12 ]

Yes I still have the problem. But I really suspect something with the mess in Java versions : Provided by Apple or Oracle... 32, 64 bit etc... :/

Comment by Anton Kudin [ 24/Dec/12 ]

I can confirm this bug is still in 1.4.6 release

Comment by Tails [ 24/Dec/12 ]

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.

I noticed this too I have 10.7.5 but for me it only happens when raining or if other sounds are playing in the background.

I have this issue also.
Seems like every sound made in the game starts at zero volume and ramps up to full volume in 100-200 milliseconds. Basically like a fast fade-in. That softens very short and "clicky" sounds. Footsteps, block placing, and pick up "pop-pop" sounds are almost inaudible.
