 Description

The following do not have smooth lighting causing sharp shading cuts when there are different light levels across them:

  • item frame (with map)
  • painting

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Turn the brightness option down to it's lowest allowed value
  2. Recreate the following setup:

Notes:

This ticket previously also concerned water, which has since been split into a dedicated ticket (MC-227302).

this is because paintings and item frames are entities and as far as i know smooth lighting only affects blocks

I've split off the issue with smooth lighting on the water surface into MC-227302.

Comment by gameo7 [ 02/Jun/21 ]

Affects 1.17 Pre-release 3. Smooth lighting underwater works, just not the surface texture.

Comment by Nightwind8887 [ 31/May/21 ]

Affects 1.17 Pre-2

Comment by Sasha [ 23/Mar/21 ]

There is also no smooth lighting under water which is I suppose the same issue

While it may not be particularly helpful to talk about a mod on a vanilla bug forum, I thought it was worth mentioning that a popular mod called Sodium fixes both this issue and MC-148689, amongst others. If within reason, someone might want to ask the developer of the mod (JellySquid) to help out with these issues.

Water surfaces should be split off into their own ticket (as it's not related to others as they are entities)

Comment by pulpetti [ 06/Jul/20 ]

Affects 1.16.1

Comment by Fabian Röling [ 14/Apr/20 ]

This seems to me to be easier to see for horizontal water (because you don't need glass in front of it) and for the back side of paintings.
BTW, I can not confirm this for soul sand.

Comment by Mega611 [ 03/Apr/20 ]

Soul sand also doesn´t have smooth lightning.

Comment by Slashertor [ 28/Feb/20 ]

I honestly do hope this is fixed. As a shader user, I really dislike seeing my maps in item frames look that bad.

Comment by Capopanzone [ 24/Nov/19 ]

Slightly related to MC-165503

Comment by László Rasmussen [ 23/Nov/19 ]

1.15 pre 1 is affected

Comment by Ratan Bharadwaj [ 02/Sep/19 ]

Isn't mojang going to fix this bug, seriously it is a game breaker for me. I was playing pocket edition up until may 2019 when I purchased the java edition for my new gaming pc and this bug irritates me whenever I'm near water or strip mining

Comment by Connor Steppie [ 02/Sep/19 ]

I've obviously already marked this for 19w35a, what was the point of commenting that?

Comment by Benjamin Bryztal [ 02/Sep/19 ]

Isn't this also true for Item Frames?

Comment by Patryk Rusakowicz [ 28/Jun/17 ]

I Have that issues at all minecraft versions witch I try open. Reinstall game or graphics cart drivers don't work. udate OS don't work too. Except on water and pictures, problem is on snow.

Comment by Preston Berry [ 13/Jan/17 ]

This still affects 1.11.2.

Comment by Fabian Röling [ 22/Jun/16 ]

Confirmed for 1.10.1.

Comment by Fabian Röling [ 12/Jun/16 ]

Confirmed for 1.10. Tested water like in picture 4 and skull painting. It's not that visible like in picture 4, but there are light differences on the block borders.

Comment by user-f2760 (Inactive) [ 07/Apr/16 ]

confirmed snow layer fixed, water and paintings are still an issue in 16w14a tho

Comment by Steven LastName [ 28/Mar/16 ]

Can confirm that smooth lighting works for snow layers in 1.9.1-pre3

Comment by [Mod] redstonehelper [ 17/Feb/16 ]

Please attach screenshots of water and snow showing the issue.

Comment by Immaterialise [ 17/Feb/16 ]

Confirmed for 1.9-pre1

Comment by Gimlao [ 12/Aug/14 ]

Still in 14w32d.

Comment by qmagnet [ 12/Aug/14 ]

Lighting was rewritten in 14w26 (MC-92). Is this still an issue?

Comment by Gimlao [ 22/May/14 ]

It's still the case in 14w20b.

Since the creation of Smooth Lighting.

Screenshot in MC-3553 is still up to date.

Comment by Galaxy_2Alex [ 21/Jan/14 ]

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version 1.7.4 / Launcher version 1.3.8 or later? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.

Comment by Emoluvjd2 [ 08/Aug/13 ]

This is still affecting 1.6.2. Also smooth lighting does not work on animated textures.

Comment by Donald Granger [ 13/Jul/13 ]

It has been like this since the Smooth Lighting mod was incorporated directly into Minecraft, ever since... Beta 1.3 or something it was.

Comment by Tenebrae [ 09/Mar/13 ]

Yes, this is still a concern in the latest 1.5 pre-release, especially visible on water.

Comment by Tails [ 05/Feb/13 ]

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
