 Description   

After drinking 8:00 potions it show duration 8:00 min left
but when it says about 2:00 min left effects just runs out

I'm experiencing 8 minute strength and fire resistance potions (running simultaniously) both ending when they have over 3 minutes left. 1.4.2 SMP in the nether. Seems to be happening regularly although I'm not sure if it's an exact time every time.

Benjamin: That is for effect, i.e.harming potions do more when hitting the same block as the player's head. The falloff damage display can be found here: http://media-mcw.cursecdn.com/e/e2/2011-10-14_01.01.39.png
Also, I'll test the main bug out in a bit on 1.3.2 as well as 1.4.2.

The bug i found is in DRINKING potions. I don't know if it is the potion running short, or the timer displaying wrong.

I heard, from one of docm's videos, that you need to splash potions in front of you head in order to have the full effect. But that only apply to splash potion though.

Dinnerbone: Oh, really? I didn't know that... But why does that then happen only sometimes? I did some tests by throwing grass in several spots and they all despawned after 5 minutes.

Matti Ruohonen: That is an intended feature of Creative mode and unrelated to this issue. Items thrown from the Creative inventory have always vanished after a quick amount of time.

While Jackson is correct regarding splash potions, I can confirm this bug occurs for potions consumed in a regular manner. Multiple times while using extended duration strength and fire resistance potions, the effects would end prematurely.

It is worth noting they usually ended suddenly with a duration between 1:00 and 2:30 remaining, though it seemed random exactly when they would stop working. What is interesting is that two potions consumed in quick succession would end one right after another, rather than one lasting 6:45 (for example) and the other lasting 6:20. This leads me to suspect there is either a bug in the timer shown on the inventory screen, or a bug in how the duration of a given effect is calculated based on some sort of variable cross-talk.

Next experiment will be consuming a potion, watching the timer on inventory screen, and also timing the effect with a stopwatch. Seems very likely the issue could just be in the timer displayed on the inventory screen.

Not a real bug. Straight from the wiki: "Note, that the base duration of splash potion is always ¾ the duration of corresponding drinkable potion."
I suggest changing the bug to splash potions incorrectly display duration or effect.

I wonder if this is related to the strange behavior that I have seen a couple of times while testing the snapshots in creative mode: items on the ground despawning after just 1-2 minutes instead of the usual 5 minutes.

I don't know the exact conditions for this, but this is how it happened the last time: Yesterday I was testing mobs picking up stuff. I had a platform high up in the air. I threw a set of armor and a sword on the ground and then spawned mobs on top of the items and hit them with a Knockback II sword to get rid of the ones that couldn't pick up stuff, until I got a mob that could pick up items (or that was the intention). However, after about 30-60 seconds from throwing the items on the ground, they despawned with about a second between each, meaning with intervals about that long as it took me to grab them from the inventory and then throw them on the ground. So it seems that in some rare cases the despawn timer has some constant offset in it

Also, the time doesn't just seem to be reduced. It seems to be random. This also happened to my friend a couple of times.

This happened to me too on a Bukkit server that I often play on... I used a drinking potion of Fire Resistance for 8:00 and it ran out at about 2-3 left. This has happened multiple times. The first time iIlost 8 diamonds, but the second time I was prepared

I can confirm although I have to say it does not happen all the time. it happened to me when I was on a server with 2 other guys and threw 1 splash potion of fire resistance on us. everything went well untill 1 other guys potion stopped to early and he burned to death while we still had 1:30 left

I can not confirm this in 1.4.2pre. I dug a hole, and placed lava inside. Then I used an 8:00 potion of fire resistance on myself. I then stepped into the hole and was on fire, but did not receive any damage. I didn't get damage for exactly 8 minutes. I used a stopwatch to verify that the time was exactly 8 minutes and it was.
