I downloaded the pre-release to see if the Minecraft server would work and it did.

Didn't get it.
Is the problem fixed with 1.5-pre ?
if not please provide seed and coordinates.

If you try moving into the area where the trees do not appear, do you get pushed back, or is there no resistance?

Wait, are you sure that you have 1.5? And does reloading the world fix it? Can you see the blocks in a program like MCEdit?
