 Description

Just installed Mincraft 1.4.2 and now getting major sound lag from running water blocks. I have a single player creative flatlands stage with 42 water blocks each placed over an iron block.

FPS:
My normal FPS is 60-90. Flying around these water blocks causes a reduction of FPS to 6-40, and walking causes fps of 6-150, creating stuttering graphics.

Debug "sound" and "tick" spikes during lag:
My normal debug sound is 1%, and tick is 15%. While flying and walking around water blocks, debug graph shows the "sound" category spiking 25-30%, and tick spiking to 40-50%.

Disabling sound eliminates the lag:
In the Options menu, turning SFX off eliminates the lag completely. Leaving SFX on and reducing all graphics options to minimal does not eliminate lag, only slightly reduces it. Only turning SFX off completely eliminates lag.

Lakes and rivers without elevation change (no "water" sound) don't cause this problem:
I've testing walking around lakes and rivers with no elevation changes that would cause the water sound with SFX on. Lag is not present around still bodies of water.

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.

I saw this fix posted in another report: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/892045-sound-lagstutter-fix/
I haven't tried it out myself though as I haven't really noticed the issue. I've tested it now, works wonders.

Edit: Found the report, https://mojang.atlassian.net/browse/MC-46 . It's most likely the same underlying issue with the sound engine.

The same happens with other new sounds as well when they are repeated or looped.
It seems to happen as you are moving away from the sound source across the threshold where you should stop hearing it.
The new water flowing, lava bubbling, mobs splashing in water and minecarts rumbling on their tracks all can cause this.

My computer is definitely aging, but simply turning sound on or off should not be causing anywhere remotely near a 100 fps swing.

Edit: Just tried the OpenAL update fix suggested below and it definitely helps a LOT for me.

I'm having the same issue. If it is running water i can't tell cause i'm on top of my world and running around. I'm hoping they fix this! I was going to make a post about this but there are two reports!

This is the stage file which creates lag when flying and walking around inside the area surrounded by running water.

Can you post a screenshot of the setup please.
