 Description

Summary

When attempting to run BDS on Windows Server 2016 or 2019 without Desktop Experience it errors with Chakra.dll not found

Steps to reproduce...

  1. Image a device or VM with Windows Server 2016 or 2019. When installing install the default selection (without Desktop Experience)
  2. Attempt to run BDS
  3. Observe the error

What I expected to happen...

BDS should run on OS's that are listed as supported.

Notes

The how to indicates Windows Server is supported but does not mention a need for the Desktop Experience. While its likely the desktop experience is required its not currently mentioned in the sys reqs.

Please see the comments for a solution. Please also make sure you meet the requirements before downloading/starting a server

Reinstall the bedrock server.

I've got it to work on the Core (i.e. no Desktop Experience) version of Server 2019 by installing the Server Core App Compatibility Feature on Demand.

With the release of 1.16 we now have a list of supported Operating Systems:

  • Windows 10 1703 or later
  • Windows Server 2016 or later
  • Ubuntu 18 or later

For occurrences of this issue and other issues on Windows 7 and non-Ubuntu Linux distributions this is not supported. However because it still occurs on a Server 2016 or 2019 install without the Desktop Experience it will remain open for that specific instance.

A brand new install of Server 2019 (no GUI) gets this error. I wiped the VM and reinstalled Server 2019 With Desktop Experience, no longer get the error.

Server OS's (Windows based) work as long as they use the Windows 10 base kernel. So a 2016 or 2019 server should work (and do for me).

Alternatively you can use Linux.

no way I’m gonna use my laptop and have it on if I wanna play with my bro’s!

well I don’t run a windows client OS as a server ever!  Appears more worlds use this format bedrock and yet your forcing windows 10 only.?   You should be targeting a server OS also so server hosting sites will run your formats.  Till you start supporting what you push I’ll be forced to use pocketmine!

Comment by Daniel H [ 21/Sep/19 ]

You need Windows 10 to use BDS.

Copied chakra.dll from my Windows 10 computer to my Windows 7 Minecraft Server and now get an error: "The program can't start because api-ms-win-core-atoms-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."

Looks like the following is related to that:
https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/a28331ae-19a3-4a34-b3ba-1e8fd4430375/missing-apimswincore-dlls

Can't seem to find that same file on my Win10 PC, so can't just copy it over. Not sure if this is helpful or not...

I'm having the exact same error when I try to run the server under Windows 7. Dropped support, really? It worked before.

I get the same error on Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center Edition.
