1.16.20 joining a realm infinitely loads

Since the release of 1.16.20 I have been unable to join a realm. I can click into it but it will stay on the loading screen indefinitely.

The first message to appear is "Joining Realm... this may take a few moments" for 20-30 seconds then it moves to "Generating world Loading Resources" and at this point it loses the purple background and stays on this screen until I give up on waiting and close the game (most I have waited is 30 minutes so far)
