The burning fuel icon in the furnace GUI will not decrease if a world is closed and reopened. Items will still smelt and the fuel source will expire after the normal time period (which immediately deactivates the furnace, as expected).
Tested in survival mode, using lava buckets, coal blocks, and coal/chacoal as fuel.
