When you kill a large medium or large Magma Cube in the Nether with a bow, there is a chance the smaller cubes that spawn can teleport up to 20 blocks to get close to you, when they spawn in.

This means keeping your distance is nearly impossible. This also happens every third or fourth kill, so isn't 100% consistent.
