Basically, on the Beta build, gold ore is not smeltable, nor does Fortune (enchantment) work at all.

      After tests with "expieremental gameplay" on and off, Fortune (1-3) would never take effect on any ore, including quartz. Also, gold ore cannot be smelted using the normal furnace or blast furnace.
