I was flying back home on my Elytra, and I crashed into an unloaded chunk that had nothing in the way except for air. I fell all the way down and almost died with 60+ levels and a bunch of enchanted diamond armor. I don't know how I ran into anything but I also wasn't able to redeploy my elytra no matter how much I spammed jump.
