Often when a player joins a multiplayer world (not a Realm) the host player swaps skins with them, when one player changes their skin it affects both players or sometimes neither player. It may have something to do with proximity to other players when changing skins, but not 100% sure. Rejoining a few times seems to fix it, but it's become such a common problem that our group just ignores the skins at this point.
