It seems that when trying to play using an import skin on a server two glitches occur.
The first one is that when another person joins the server and selects an import skin, other players who have an import skin on will immediately have their imported skin switched to the skin of the player who just selected their imported skin. Attempting to re-select their imported skin causes every other player with imported skins to change to that skin. This makes it so once the glitch occurs it cannot be fixed. I have not seen the glitch occur when someone enters the server with their imported skin already on, so I think the main issue is when someone changes to their own imported skin.
The second glitch is when a skin designed to be on the thin arm model refuses to act like it's on the thin arm model. This is a rather recent experience so I don't have much info on how to recreate it so ill just say what little I do know. I chose a skin that uses the thin arm model of my skin in the main menu of Minecraft and set it to the thin model at first then entered the server. While I was in 3rd person back view I noticed my arms were hollowed as if the skin wasn't big enough. This was true as I realized that it was acting as if I had selected the bulky arms model. I went into the skin profile menu and tried re-importing it with the thin arm model. The model didn't change arm width. I went and imported a different skin with the thin arm model, then went back to the other model and tried again with the thin arm model. The model still didn't change arm width.
I do not know why this occurs, but I do know it is a problem that happens across servers. I hope I have given enough information to help.
