Stone won't get smelted into smooth stone

In my survival world, I tried to smelt cobblestone into stone and then stone into smooth stone, but the stone wouldn't get smelted.

After testing in a creative world, I found that smelting the stone from the creative inventory worked, but smelting cobblestone into stone and then putting that directly into the furnace doesn't work.

Edit: I was just told this was fixed in the newest beta.
