My friend and I were playing on a world we made (he was on Xbox, I was on PC), and we summon an end portal with commands. Then we surrounded it in blocks and hopped in. My friend went back to the overworld by dying, and the ender dragon disappeared from the end and came into the overworld. I killed myself, and the dragon was back in the end but still did destruction. BTW we were in surrvival.
