Opening your inventory cancels crouching

So I'm in the nether, carefully building a bridge of dirt over an ocean of lava and crouching so I don't fall off. I run out of dirt, open my inventory to get some more, and when I close my inventory, for whatever reason, I'm suddenly not crouching anymore, and before I realize that was the case, I've already walked right off and fallen into the lava below.
