I was making a cactus-related trap, and made a big pillar of cacti with a sign on top. I accidentally spawned some falling sand that went right next to the cacti, but the sign stayed floating.
I experimented with other items like mob heads, and they floated as well.
Another weird thing is, block updates don't affect it; it will remain floating.
