There is a glitch where if you throw a trident and change hotbar slot at the same time (not same same. The timing can be difficult) , the trident will be thrown but remain in the original slot so you can pick it back up and have two. The trident will delete anything you have in the slot you change to. 

Update: this works with food too but I think the timing is much harder
