Game will not start, but always says it needs an update. The size is always either 0 KB, 1.7 GB or 2.7 GB, nothing else. Usually 0KB. The update always starts without you confirming it, and refuses to be removed from the queue via pausing, cancelling or uninstalling (all three of which do absolutely nothing). It creates a duplicate minecraft tile, one of which is the original, and the other says the install date is the day the update started. The original always keeps a constant size of around 850 MB. The progress bar will jump after a restart, but never moves onscreen, as if it does not recognize that progress is being made.
I have had some success in removing the game from the queue to allow other apps and games to update. But to do so, I had to force an app to the top of the queue using the "update now" button, and then press cancel on minecraft once the console is updating the other app. This worked two out of three times. Canceling the update removed the duplicate, but not the original. Any attempt to play the game from this point started the whole process over again. I tried to uninstall the original game, to no avail. The one time it appeared in the queue, it froze at zero percent. All attempts to remove the original game failed, even with soft restarts (pressing restart in the menu) and hard restarts (pulling the plug or holding the power button on the console for five secs.). If it means anything, sometime the console would crash during the shutdown bit of the restart sequence, and not turn back on.
Through much restarting the console, I did eventually get the game to launch. This was done by removing the duplicate, then making sure the original copy was on the external drive (since I found it impossible to uninstall), and unplugging the drive. I pressed and held the power button to do a hard shutdown, then unplugged the console and waited for fifteen minutes. It booted normally when I powered it back on, whereas many of these boots and restarts have taken much longer than normal. I then put the disc in as if to start a fresh install. The same results occurred as the original symptoms, however, this was the only update with a size of 1.7 GB. I did transfer the original copy between external and internal storage multiple times before this. The game did launch, but does not have any of my worlds, and cannot enter the marketplace, sync old worlds or create new worlds. When any of these things are attempted, it says "You are almost out of data storage space! Minecraft has restricted access to this feature until you clear up additional storage space." I have about 120 GB free on internal storage, and the external is still not plugged in.
In the end, just after this I got my original game with all my progress to load by plugging the external drive back in. It works fine except that it takes about three times longer to load. Three minutes vs ten. The duplicate game is still there.
I'm on xbox one s. If it helps, all results were consistent when using an internal drive or external, and when the original and copy were on different drives.
If you need a video of something, just say so.
