Unlike other non specific wooden blocks (any block that is crafted using wood that doesn't have variants for each type), chiseled bookshelves don't accept the newer wood types as valid crafting materials. Only the original six species (oak, birch, spruce, jungle, acacia, dark oak) can be used. This also applies to the slabs present in the recipe.
