I have released 5 axolotls near my base to rid the area of drowned. I have seen the axolotls attack the drowned as well as take damage no issue there. however instead of the entering into the regeneration phase when they are low heath, they instead die. I have seen 3 out of 5 axolotls die in front of me. I have seen 1 go into regeneration mode, but later I saw it die to a drowned. is it that drowned do enough damage (not referring to trident wielding drowned) to completely bypass the regeneration stage? if so that's just sad...
I did a test in creative spawning in around 50 drowned and 50 axolotls, it was actually fun to watch, but in the battle I saw on average 50% of the time the axolotl would die and the other 50% it would enter into regeneration mode. so in conclusion, axolotls only enter regeneration mode if the "feel like it" and that's pretty unreliable and expensive to have as companions in survival.
