When using an anvil to name a name tag or place an enchantment on gear it will make the hammer noise and show up for just a second as completed before reappearing inside the anvil back at the beginning with no name or enchantment. But it takes your experience and causes a use on the anvil and if the anvil breaks then your item just disappears.
