1 place a sand block gravel block or any other gravity affected block 1 or more air blocks above soul sand

Observation
Soul sand breaks

Expected result
gravity blocks lands on the soul sand

This is a major issue in the nether as it make is nearly impossible to clear out lava lakes in a soul sand valley and before 1.18.0 this was not an issue the block would land on top of the soul sand and not break
