It appears that a world may go missing/corrupted if a redstone machine or flying machine is left running when saving and exiting a world.
world file still exists in the Minecraft worlds folder and is able to be recovered by creating a new world and coping both the level.dat and level.dat_old files to the missing world.

Upon recovery it seems that only the machine that caused the issue is missing parts that would have been pushed by a piston when the game was exited.
it's worth mentioning however that this recovery, while keeping the players inventory, appears to reset chests and therefore double chests will be separated and empty.
