When paintings are placed, they are invisible.  When you hover over where you have placed a painting that cannot be seen, the edges of the block(s) the painting is/are on do not show.  You can break the painting and retrieve it into your inventory.  This only began happening today, April 11, 2021.  In the picture attached, there is a painting placed where the crosshair is but it is not visible.
