Tamed wolves / dogs and wild wolves named using a Name Tag still count towards the passive mob cap when playing on Realms in update 1.16.100. This behavior does not occur playing version 1.16.100 in single player / not on Realms.
Tamed wolves / dogs should not count towards mob caps.
Mobs named with a Name Tag should not count towards mob caps.
To replicate:
(untamed/wild wolves named with Name Tags)
- I created a platform of grass blocks in a Flower Forest biome.
- I stood in a place where only those grass blocks were within spawn radius and observed up to 5 packs of passive mobs spawning.
- I named 5 untamed wolves with name tags and placed them on the grass block platform. They are loose - not in boats or on leads.
- No more passive mobs will spawn on the grass block platform.
- I removed the wolves with boats to a distance of at least 80 blocks from the platform and from the player.
- Passive mobs now again spawn on the grass block platform.
(tamed wolves / dogs)
- I replaced the wolves on the grass block platform and tamed them with bones, and made them sit.
- I stood in a place where only those grass blocks were within spawn radius, but again, no more passive mobs will spawn.
- I walked to a distance of at least 80 blocks from the platform and from the player, and sat the tamed dogs, who had teleported with me.
- Passive mobs now spawn again the grass block platform.
Simulation distance is standard, 4, on the Realm.
I was unable to recreate this in creative mode on a single player copy of the same seed. In single player mode, the mob cap appears to behave as intended. Once wild wolves are named with Name Tags or tamed into dogs, passive mobs will spawn nearby, indicating that the named or tamed wolves have been correctly removed from the passive mob cap.
