In a normal Minecraft world I have found that sometimes mobs seem to freeze in place and you can move them or damage them at all but you can remove the blocks bellow them. In the picture it is of a llama and I could brake blocks bellow it but not damage or kill the mob. This has happened to me before and at some points the mob could despawn or even teleport away.
