Sounds from damage, particularly fall damage, are delayed. At times, I will fall, hit the ground, walk some distance, lose health, & then have the sound indicator of damage being taken. It is disorienting. There kind of delay is especially annoying in cases of "MLG bucket"-style fall damage reduction tactics, such as placing hay bales while falling—the block is placed & a few ticks later the player dies anyway. It's unclear if these are fundamentally the same problem or different.
