When playing minecraft dungeons prior to updating this weekend to version 1.13 friends could join the game by pressing L3 on other controllers connected to the PS4, since the update friends cannot join so it is only a one player game at present.  There is no error, L3 just does nothing & have tested this on multiple controllers.
