I have maps placed in item frames before 1.9 that I was updating by middle-clicking to grab the map when I noticed that the maps that covered the area that the maps were placed in did not show the white player icon. They only showed the green "item frame" icon. However, the maps that did not map that area showed the white player icon as usual.
