If you have an armorstand with ShowArms:1b then you can place any item in there and then break it, it will drop an absolutely identical item. You can then drop all the original items and the duplicate will show a red 0. If the item can be used (Armor Stand, Food, Ender Pearls, etc, probably blocks too, haven't tested) you can use it and it will decrement the item's value to -1 and so on.
