placing boat underwater

What I expected to happen was...:
boat would float to top of water

What actually happened was...:
boat stays underwater and let's say it is a birch boat,
it transforms into an oak boat and still stays underwater

Steps to Reproduce:
1. place a birch boat while underwater
2. watch the magic happen
3. beak the boat
4. boom free oak boat
