I died within 30 meters of the worldspawn. When I appeared arrows started coming at me out of nowhere (invisible skeleton in the water) and bubbles appeared in a certain spot in the water coming towards me (invisible creeper). The skeleton turned visible and actually shot the creeper once before it got me, so I can confirm that they're not invulnerable and that they don't stay invisible.
