Not sure if this was caused by the new update, but I've never had this happen before. There I was, minding my own mining business and digging up a coal vein when, all of a sudden, cave spider out of nowhere!

      I killed it, don't worry.

I thought, hmm, maybe there's an empty space that it dropped from, a little empty pocket that I released when I broke that last block. I shrugged it off and kept mining....

Except the very next coal block did the same thing and dropped a cave spider, along with the coal. I killed that one, and noted that there was no additional empty space for a spider to hide in- it was hiding IN the coal.

If it makes any difference, the coal was adjacent to diorite and stone.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, but I've never encountered this behaviour before, and I have to admit I don't like it. It's bad enough silverfish do this, but cave spiders, too?
