Distance-based fall damage was fine and realistic for a while but it's becoming more and more obvious.
It's been an issue since 1.6 when leads were added. To see it in action hang an animal on a lead from a fence in the sky and let it drop. Even if it's only two feet above the ground, depending on how long it's been up there, it'll die.
Now versions of the levitation effect outside of the natural range but clearly put there intentionally also make it very evident that the problem is still here.
The effects we applied to ladders and water and vines were lazy, unnecessary cop-outs to be frank. I think it's time we actually switched fall-damage to velocity-based.
It's not the fall that kills you. It's that sudden stop at the end.
Edit: Also noteworthy is that when logging out and logging in the distance fallen is not conserved but the velocity is.
This isn't a logical error or a runtime error. It's more of a common sense error. For the past ever we've been fixing this issue for everything that we add alters your velocity in midair. But we're going to miss a lot of things if we keep doing that instead of just fixing the core issue itself.
