regular mine tracks and power minetracks (possibly others, I didn't test), don't want to line up with either powered tracks, or just other kinds of tracks. The "block placement" sound won't play, and when the block is destroyed, multiple tracks will drop. Also, putting them in the off-hand slot has similar effects, somtimes duping entire stacks at a time.
I was specifically doing this trying to get them to go uphill, but it seems to work in any situation that fits what's described above, from what I tested.
I have a feeling it might be something to do with the client and server not communicating properly, where the client places a block, but the server doesn't complete placing it, so next time the client tries to place it, the server tries to correct it's inventory. Just spitballing, though. I don't really know how Minecraft works.
