Villagers will often just be found standing outside at night. They are not under any surface that could class as a building: either they're running rapidly in circles, or facing a door and talking to another villager. Get inside and don't die AI seems to be overridden by talking to other villagers AI. Baby villagers will sprint around and get killed at night.
