Level creation: bonus chest on, cheats on (which I used only to give myself emeralds), and default terrain generation.

A village has formed with a large chasm through the middle of it.
Problem: severe lag/freeze occurring periodically (every 5-20 seconds?) lasting for at least a second each
One villager fell down the ravine, but landed on a ledge (so he took damage, but survived). Naturally, he was stuck. The lag started about the time this happened, though I am unsure if it was a coincidence or not.
I saved the villager (and as far as I know he got back to the rest of the village), but the lag continued. I cannot tell for sure, but it felt like the lag duration was increasing (though it might just have been my patience decreasing).
In any case, I tried running away from the village, but the lag persisted until I decided to quit (I only travelled a 150-200 squares - though I could not see the village anymore, as my view distance is 4 chunks, I don't know if that was far out enough to unload the village).
