Unconfirmed
My son has been playing Minecraft just fine for months on our older laptop (WinXPsp3, Java 1.7), but reported yesterday that he was unable to play Minecraft v1.8 on the newer laptop (a fairly fresh OS installation) with Java 1.8u25 x86 (the default suggested from www.java.com).
1.8 fails early during initialization with an out-of-memory error (trying to allocate buffers somewhere from within java native io (nio). Variation of Java memory options didn't help (-Xms1024m -Xmx1024m)
I tried three different Intel HD graphics drivers (8.15.10.2025 (factory install), 8.15.10.2622 (Lenovo update), 8.15.10.2993 (Intel update)), but no change. IIRC 1.7.9 started, but had distorted graphics. 1.7.2 seemed to work.
Then I replaced java 1.8u25 (x86) with 1.7u71 (x86). This would cause Minecraft v1.8 to crash hard during initialization with an Exception / Access violation.
Finally I tried java 1.7u72 x64 (with -Xms1024m -Xmx1536m), and tada, it works now. Something seems to be badly broken with Minecraft v1.8 for 32-bit Java. I think my son told me that it doesn't work on the other two WinXPsp3 laptops either (where 64-bit Java is not an option), on which he had been playing earlier minecraft versions (with lots of mods) just fine for months.
