Minecraft server spawn protection in 1.8 will no longer allow non-OP players to use Pressure Plates

i planned on players using command blocks and scoreboard to change teams at spawn. the wiki said that only Pressure Plates work in spawn protected areas

What actually happened was only oped players could step and activate Pressure Plates and everything red stone

non-op players could not use trip wire or buttons or Pressure Plates
