1. Use /give to give yourself a custom head.
2. Place the head.
3. Watch as the head is placed as a skeleton head for a few moments before reverting to the player head.

Notice in the picture below, I'm holding my head, no skeleton head is in the action bar. The one placed is from my own head, and I'm definitely not a skeleton.
