When I changed the render distance in my world a strange glitch happened

the render distance would change

this weird glitch appeared, the world was transparent, not like a regular chunk error, had to re-log, by the way all these screenshots were taken from the same spot in my world, moving my mouse around changed what it looked like

Steps to Reproduce:
1. The world I was in was made before I switched versions
2. render distance was set to 8 chunks
3. set render distance to 12 chunks
