When you create a banner in minecraft version !!! 14w30c !!! , you have the option to name the banner using an anvil, like you can with any tool or weapon.

However, upon placing a named banner, such as "The super banner", and afterwards destroying it and picking it up again, its name will have changed back to it's original "White banner" or "Black banner", depending on which banner you used.
