In 14w32a/b, when a beacon is placed on the bedrock-ceiling of the nether (with access to the sky), the beam appears in the beacon but is stopped/cut as seen in the first two pics below (the third to compare with previous versions).
Seems a graphical bug (128 blocks height limit in nether) the effects are still working correctly.
