Villagers leave ghosts of the items they drop to each other. For example, when a villager farms some wheat and drops bread on the ground and another villager picks it up, the bread does not always disappear. It cannot be picked up or removed through means such as lava, but it is still there. It does not happen 100% of the time, although it is somewhat common, as the screenshot shows with three different ghost bread.
